In addition to placing the restriction on first-time posters, I also purged the database of any profiles which had not ever made a single post. That cut our "membership" from more than 3,000 to about 100, but each of those 100 or so are all bonafide contributors to our community.
On the downside, I'm aware that I probably deleted more than a few legit profiles. I apologize, and I hope those individuals will forgive me and re-register.
