Then, the church bells tolled.
Midnight.
The celebratory noise seemed to recede, falling away into a muffled distance.
A black SUV veered sharply away from the crowds, slipping like a shadow into the maw of a narrow side street. Inside, two young girls sat in the backseat. One of them, dressed in a mummy costume, let out a light, amused laugh.
"This is officially the strangest Uber I've ever taken," she joked.
The driver didn't respond. The laughter died in her throat as the silence in the cabin became heavy, oppressive. The woman leaned forward, peering into the rearview mirror. The driver wore a heavy black hood that obscured his features, leaving only a pair of milky, pupilless white eyes staring back at her.
The vehicle lurched to a stop. The locks clicked shut with a synchronized, metallic finality.
A man in the front seat grabbed the handle, pulling frantically, but the door refused to budge. Beneath the seats, a faint, sickly red glow began to bleed through the upholstery. A glyph—ancient and jagged—manifested in the floorboards.
"What the hell is that?" the woman whispered.
The glyph pulsed, synchronized with a voice that didn't come from a throat, but seemed to echo from the very walls of the car.
"The blood remembers."
Then the lights vanished, and the darkness was filled with screams.
